Why Hemp? And What Are Your Horses Telling You? Check Your Omegas

Not all equines are the same. Depending on the health status, exercise level, and condition of your horse, supplementation of fat may be beneficial. But other equines such as ponies, minis, donkeys, and mules cannot tolerate the high levels horses can. They require some fat, but generally 1/3 to 1/2 the amount given to horses. Remember, fat needs to be in your horse’s diet, but not all fats are the same. Though they all provide the same number of calories, each fat source has its own individual omega profile, impacting your horse’s overall health.

Balancing omegas is easy to do once you know the proportion of each type of fat in common sources. For example, fresh, healthy pasture contains approximately 4 times more omega 3s than omega 6s, making it a perfect food. Commercially fortified feeds, however, often add “vegetable oil” which is usually soybean oil or corn oil which is not exactly ideal for any animal. The omega 6 content of each of these two oils is more than 50%, making them poor choices when trying to reduce inflammation. To balance these oils, you can add sources that are very high in omega 3s, such as flaxseed meal, flaxseed oil, or Chia seeds. Fish oils are also predominantly omega 3s, but their  should be limited all together, since horses are not fish eaters. So what is the ideal fat to give to your animals? Hempseed Oil is nature’s most perfectly balance plant-based, nonGMO omega oil that provides a healthy balance of omega 3/6/9

AF_4_LTR_JUGThere are two fatty substances, one omega 3 and one omega 6, that are considered “essential,” meaning the horse’s body cannot produce them. Therefore, they must be in the diet, hempseed oil offers this balance naturally; even better than olive oil (9:1), soy oil (7:1), flax oil (1:4), and even canola oil (2:1).

Benefits of hempseed oil balance of the right ratio of 3/6/9 Omegas:

  • balancing the immune system
  • protecting joints and ligaments
  • decreasing nervousness
  • improving heart and blood vessel health
  • reducing skin allergies
  • diminishing airway inflammation
  • supporting normal gastrointestinal function
  • maintaining hair and hoof health
  • improving sperm motility and speed
  • protective effect on the heart, brain and blood vessels
  • Alleviate allergic hyperactivity
  • Support horses in heavy work
  • Reduce exercise-induced bronchiole constriction

There is increasing scientific evidence that Omega 3 and Omega 6 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids also play important roles in animals with conditions such as pruritic skin disease, atopic dermatitis, allergies, degenerative joint disease, neoplasia, thromboembolic disease and eosinophilic granuloma complex. The introduction of polyunsaturated fats into pet food has developed considerable interest.  The problem being that these fats are inherently unstable and the food becomes rancid quite quickly. This is especially true of flax. Some foods have used marine or fish products and here the problem lies in potential heavy metal toxicity. Hemp ingredients would be an excellent addition to animal food based on its high levels of antioxidants thereby providing a natural preservative and a balanced omega-6: omega-3 ratio.

Hemp Seed Oil  has great potential in the animal industry. Immediate applications include the addition of Hemp pellets or the ground hemp meal for fiber and its protein into animal food/concentrates and the oil as a supplement.
